Students

With the support of the Queensland Government and commercial sponsors, GIW-2008 is delighted to offer bursaries for Australian and International students attending the conference. These will be awarded on a competitive basis. The awarding of a bursary is at the complete discretion of the GIW-2008 organising committee. Students must present a paper or poster to be eligible.

Selection criteria

International and Australian students are eligible to apply. A student is defined as an undergraduate, honours, MSc, PhD and similar, but does not include postdoctoral fellows or research associates.

To be eligible, the student must have a contributed paper or poster accepted for the conference; must present the paper or poster in person; and must register for and actually attend the conference.

The bursary will be paid in person at GIW-2008. No cheques will sent in advance nor via third parties.

When deciding what bursaries to award, students who have a paper accepted will receive priority over students presenting a poster.

Students who receive free registration via institutional sponsorship may be given lower priority in the event that many high-quality applications are received.

Technical details

Applications for a bursary should be sent to A/Prof James Hogan at j.hogan@qut.edu.au in the first instance. The subject line should include the phrase “GIW 2008: Application for student bursary”. Except by explicit prior arrangement, applications are to be submitted only via email to the address given above. A confirmation email will be sent within 48 hours.

Some supporting information and documentation must be provided, and this is summarised below. It is recommended that the supporting information be sent as a single pdf, including any scanned letters from the university or the supervisor.

The application must include the following:
• The title of the paper/poster and, if known, the EasyChair submission number.
• Proof of current student status, including the student number and the formal name of the institution.
• A letter of support from the supervisor or advisor on institutional letterhead

At its discretion, the GIW-2008 organising committee may ask for the date of graduation or thesis submission.

Please note that the bursary can be used only to offset the cost of travel and/or accommodation. It cannot be used to pay for conference registration.

In their application, students should nominate the value of the bursary they require and how this was calculated. At its complete discretion, the GIW-2208 committee may offer funds equal to only a portion of the amount requested.

The bursary will be provided as a gross amount and should not violate visa conditions for domestically based students or for international registrants.

Key dates

• The closing date for applications is Wednesday, October 22.
• Applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application by Friday, October 31
